We are currently experiencing extreme weather conditions in South Africa which range from drought and devastating veld fires to severe thunderstorms.
You must always take reasonable steps to prevent loss or damage to your insured property prior due to or after an insured incident. Make sure that you are aware of either the special conditions in your insurance policy wording or endorsements stated in your Policy Schedule which you must adhere to.
“Example: Is your house protected against lightning during a thunderstorm?”
You may have a policy condition stating that in order to avoid paying an additional excess amount and to reduce claims; it is advisable to install surge protectors on the main distribution board of your house for incoming electrical services, as well as internal lightning and electrical surge protection devices/equipment on electronic equipment, telephone- and data lines.
The installation of surge protectors must comply with the South African National Standards (SANS) specifications, the devices itself with SABS standards and a Certificate of Compliance must be issued by the installer of the surge protection equipment.
By installing surge protectors you avoid unnecessary inconvenience that may be caused as a result of the loss and mitigate the risk of having to submit a claim which may have an impact on your insurance premium.
