Case study: The transfer of Lion of Africa clients

There is never a good time to receive word of an underwriter closing down a line of business or permanently shutting up shop.

When Legacy received notice in November last year that Lion of Africa (LoA) was winding down its operations, the team went into overdrive and not only very quickly found alternative cover through another underwriter, but also set an automated IT driven solution in place.

Clients were informed of the LoA closure while at the same time receiving details of the alternative cover on offer so they could seamlessly move forward. Their responses, choices and permissions were recorded electronically and brokers were regularly updated and appraised of the progress and outcome.

The result was that brokers were able to enjoy a stress-free holiday season knowing that their clients were safe-guarded against not having cover whilst at the same time being dealt with efficiently. There was 100% positive feedback, proving that life is easier when you work with Legacy.

Says proud Legacy team member Anel van Schalkwyk: “We are very excited about technology and the possibilities that it brings, and Legacy has constantly proved that its automated processes are fast and effective.”

The underwriter taking over the business was equally impressed and complimentary with regards to the highly automated, quick and efficient systems-driven process employed by Legacy using the Legacy On-Line (LOL) system. Moreover, all required communication and disclosures were done correctly and within the required time frames.

Nicky Greyling from APBCO Brokers adds: “The high level of automation (for traditionally tedious processes like following up on unpaid debit orders and renewals) makes the Legacy On-Line system a pleasure to deal with. The most bizarre insurance claims. https://www.lum.co.za/lum/2019/02/12/insurance-claims/ https://www.lum.co.za/lum/2019/02/12/insurance-claims/#respond Tue, 12 Feb 2019 06:01:41 +0000 https://www.lum.co.za/lum/?p=1199 Insurance and humour don’t usually go together, but with thousands of insurance claims received by Legacy every year, there are bound to emerge some entertaining and unbelievable stories. We thought that it might be interesting to dig up some of the strangest statements made during the claims process. Unbelievable? Believe it or not! The invisible car: One gentleman claimed that the accident that he was involved in occurred because he was admiring the lady in the car next to him when an invisible car crashed into his and then “suddenly disappeared”. We wonder if the lady was also not paying attention to her surroundings or if she noticed him… Hold your horses: Another reported that when he was about to pass the parked cars, he could not see the horse in front of him but he heard a big bump and then the car “just went over the horse”. We guess sometimes mysterious cars as well as horses just appear and disappear out of nowhere. Run Forest, Run! Another unfortunate incident involving an animal occurred when a client hit a buck. When we asked him if he hit the buck, he replied: “I don’t know if I hit the buck or if the buck hit me, we were both running”. Don’t stop me now, I’m on a roll… The last story sounds so ridiculous, one seriously needs to ask the question: “How is this even possible?” In a series of very unfortunate events, a gentleman who was involved in a fender bender with the car in front of him, reversed slightly in an attempt to assess the damage to the vehicles. As he backed his car up, he crashed into the vehicle behind him too. Bewildered and in shock, he opened his car door, only to knock a passing cyclist off his bicycle. This sounds too crazy to be true, but there were witnesses who could attest to the events. Let’s just hope that he went home after that and stayed there for the rest of the day. Although some of these claims might sound incredibly odd, there’s no doubt that getting caught in a sticky situation like one of these, can be stressful and upsetting. Make sure that you have a good motor vehicle policy to prepare you for any unexpected situations.

Why keeping proof of ownership safe is so important. https://www.lum.co.za/lum/2019/02/12/proof-of-ownership/ https://www.lum.co.za/lum/2019/02/12/proof-of-ownership/#respond Tue, 12 Feb 2019 06:00:36 +0000 https://www.lum.co.za/lum/?p=1196 Proof of ownership will remain one of the things that cause a lot of headaches for insurance companies. That is of utmost importance for you as a client to keep sufficient documentation of proof of ownership regarding your expensive items. Having this documentation assists your insurance agent in replacing your stolen or damaged item without any hassles. We have provided you with a few methods you can use, to keep your proof of ownership up to date and safe: 1.The Old-School Method: Thoroughly documenting each item you own is the most important aspect that insurance companies put the most emphasizes on when it comes to claiming. Your documentation should include a description of each expensive item you own, as well as the serial numbers for the items, if available. Take photographs, if possible, of your items to aid in your inventory process. Once your major items are recorded, store your records in a safe place, preferably away from your home. 2.Document, Document, Document: Keeping all your receipts isn’t just useful at tax time. It can also be useful to help prove ownership and replacement value of your big-ticket items. Other documentation, such as appraisals for antiques, collectibles and jewellery, should also be maintained in a safe place. Actual cash value policies won’t reimburse you for the full purchase price like a replacement value policy might, but either way; you’ll have additional proof of your possessions. 3.Category Limits: Thoroughly documenting your items does not necessarily mean your insurance company is automatically going to replace everything. It’s just as important to understand the limits of your policy. It is of utmost importance that you ensure your insured valuables, are insured for the correct amount, and not understated on your policy schedule. Keeping these few methods in mind, will contribute to making life easier for you should you ever have a claim.

Top tips for driving on a rainy day. https://www.lum.co.za/lum/2019/02/07/tips-for-driving/ https://www.lum.co.za/lum/2019/02/07/tips-for-driving/#respond Thu, 07 Feb 2019 14:48:49 +0000 https://www.lum.co.za/lum/?p=1193 Severe storms can be experienced in various parts of the country during the summer season. They can claim lives and destroy the homes of hundreds, leaving South Africans astounded at the damage that heavy rainfall can cause. Driving through flooded areas can be dangerous and have potential life-threatening effects, it is therefore imperative to take preventative measures to ensure that you will arrive safely at your destination.   Here is what you need to know when driving in heavy rain:  RATHER LATE THAN SORRY: The early bird doesn’t always catch the worm! If you can avoid it, don’t drive during a heavy storm. Rather delay your trip and find somewhere safe to park until the storm subsides. Do not park your vehicle near electrical lines, streams, rivers, trees or busy roads and NEVER stop on the side of the highway. WIPE AWAY: Check the back and front windscreen wiper blades to make sure that they are in perfect working condition. SHOW YOURSELF: Turn your headlights on so that you will be more visible to people driving in front and behind you. SLOWLY BUT SURELY: If there is no protection nearby and you are forced to drive in a hailstorm, drive slowly and cautiously – driving at a slower speed may reduce the damage, as hail will ricochet off the surface of the vehicle. Remember to switch your hazard lights on. If possible, pull over at a safe location, grab the floor mats and put them on the roof and bonnet. You can also keep blankets in the boot to use. HOLD THE HORSES: Slow down and maintain a safe distance between your car and the one in front. If possible, try to double the normal following distance. APPROACH WITH CAUTION: Avoid driving through already flooded areas and high velocity flow regions. IT’S NOT A BOAT – IT WON’T FLOAT: Never drive through swift-flowing water – it is powerful and you may be swept away. STILL WATERS RUN DEEP: Never drive through deep standing water – you don’t know how deep it is or if the road has been washed away. Your car is not waterproof and driving through deep water can damage your car and lead to catastrophic engine failure. NUMBERS GAME: Save emergency services numbers on your mobile phone. KEEP A LID ON IT: If your car breaks down during torrential rain, keep the bonnet closed while you wait for assistance to prevent water from damaging the electrical system.

Example: You may insure your vehicle that displayed your name on the registration document, but you may not insure your mother’s vehicle on your policy as the vehicle registration document is in her name.   The sum insureds on your policy: As the policy holder you need to seek advise from you broker to make sure that you select the adequate sum insured for your items, if you do not insure the total value of an item you might be putting yourself at risk of being under-insured or being responsible for part of your loss.   It is important that you ensure your cover remains relevant as time passes.   Contact us for more information.

Attending to your insurance is most probably not on your list of favourite activities.  We do our utmost to ensure fast and efficient processes, but as the policyholder you also have certain responsibilities to assist us with this task.

Give us accurate information:

You must make sure that all the information you give us about yourself, your property and your risk profile is accurate. This will include information about your financial situation, such as insolvency. Incomplete or incorrect information could affect the validity of your policy, and may result in us voiding your policy.

You must tell us immediately of any material changes that may increase the risk of loss or damage to your insured property. We will then have the right either to cancel the policy, or let it continue with new terms and conditions.

Insurable interest:

As the policyholder you need to at all times have insurable interest in any item insured on your policy, in the event of a claim you might be requested to provide proof. Example: You may insure your vehicle that displayed your name on the registration document, but you may not insure your mother’s vehicle on your policy as the vehicle registration document is in her name.

The sum insureds on your policy:

As the policy holder you need to seek advise from you broker to make sure that you select the adequate sum insured for your items, if you do not insure the total value of an item you might be putting yourself at risk of being under-insured or being responsible for part of your loss.

It is important that you ensure your cover remains relevant as time passes.
